HICC at WGF

This year we are pleased to announce that the Hobart International Chess Club will be joining us at our Winter Gamesfest. It makes sense – Chess is, after all, a strategy board game!

Throughout the event, members of the HICC will be present to introduce people to various forms of chess. We hope that they will also have the opportunity to learn more about the kinds of games HoGS people usually play!

The HICC schedule is:
Saturday

  • 10:30 am – Chess 960 Demo

Chess 960 (or Fischer Random Chess) was invented by former World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer. It employs the same board and pieces as standard chess, but the starting position of the pieces on the players’ home ranks is randomised.

  • 12:30 pm – Horde Chess Demo

Horde Chess is a fun variant where White has 36 pawns and no other pieces, Black has a normal set of chess pieces. White must checkmate the black king before Black captures all the pawns. All normal chess rules apply… well, as much as possible when one side has no King!

  • 2-3 pm – Simultaneous Chess Challenge

One HICC member will face off four challengers at once. Try it and see if your skills are a match to a quarter of an experienced chess player’s attention!

  • 5-8 pm – One-on-One Challenge

This is your opportunity to play one-on-one with an HICC representative and receive some coaching and information. Each session is 15 minutes and will include one or two games, plus comments.

Sunday

  • 10:30 am – Chess 960 Demo
  • 12:30 pm – Horde Chess Demo
  • 2-3 pm – Simultaneous Chess Challenge
