Gather, Laugh, Play … Are You Game?

The Hobart Games Society, affectionately known as HoGS, is a relatively informal collective of people passionate to one degree or another about games.

We mostly play social board and card games, the likes of which you’ll see described in abundance on boardgamegeek.com. Many of these are known in the English speaking world as German games, Euro games, strategy games, or designer games.  They are generally elegantly designed and eminently playable by people of almost any age. When someone mentions board games, do you think of Monopoly, Risk, or Trivial Pursuit? If so, then there is a whole world of games you’ve probably never experienced, and you’ll be very pleasantly surprised at what is on offer at a HoGS event.

We’re based in Hobart, Tasmania, and we run a games night almost every weekend. Sign up to our Mailing List to get an email every second month with a list of our upcoming games nights and events!

Geek Quiz Night #3

Patricia Mackenzie : January 31, 2017 12:28 pm : HoGS News

UPDATE: We only have three tables left!! Get in quick to reserve your spot. 🙂

We are excited about our third annual GEEK QUIZ NIGHT, to be held on Saturday, 1 April 2017, at the Best Western Hotel in Bathurst Street, Hobart.

The structure will be similar to past quiz nights, with topics to include board games, comics and cartoons, cities, science, television, weapons, money and more. Our prize list is growing, with heaps of great stuff to win.

There will be live rounds, as well as table rounds that you can work on throughout the night. The rounds will be split into three sections with breaks in between. We plan to finish up by around 11 pm — but no promises!

This year we are introducing priority booking for financial HoGS members. Last year the quiz booked out in 48 hours, so the extra days could be vital to ensure your place in the 3rd annual Geek Quiz Night! For booking details read on..

THE QUIZ
When: Saturday 1st April 7pm (doors open at 6pm).

Where: Goulburn room at the Best Western, Hobart

Cost: $90 per team of 4-6 people

Food: There will be drinks and snacks to purchase from a bar in the room and there’s a restaurant just outside the room where you can purchase meals to have at your tables (http://www.bestwestern.com.au/hobart/hotels/best-western-hobart/restaurant/). Unfortunately food from outside the Best Western will not be able to be brought to the event.

Age restriction: So it turns out geeks come in the small size, too. We don’t want them to miss out on the fun! You’ll be pleased to hear that this year our policy has changed along with the venue change! We are allowing up to two under 18 year olds per team, with no minimum age limit. Any more would be too much of an advantage! Please note though that we recommend 12 and up due to the difficulty of the questions (and some possible violence themes) and the hosts will not be asked to kidify their language so there might be some mature words thrown in occasionally! If your kids can handle that, they are more than welcome.

BOOKINGS
Financial Hobart Games Society members: Receive priority booking! Opens at 7pm on Thursday the 9th of February

General public: Opens at 7pm on Monday the 13th of February

Further booking info: To book, simply email Georgie at secretary@hogs.org.au with your full name and phone number. Bookings before 7pm will not be accepted so keep an eye on the clock and wait til it ticks over to 7:00pm! Do not send your payment through until Georgie has confirmed you have a spot – we don’t want to have to deal with any refunds. Once your payment has come through, Georgie will contact you to find out your table preference. Tables will be allocated based on booking order so it is first in best dressed! Your team name and the names of your other members will also be needed before the quiz so if you know those please include them in the email too to save us chasing you up.

Priority booking conditions: Please note that the person booking for your team (who also must be on the team) must be a financial HoGS member at the time of booking to be eligible for priority booking. Becoming a HoGS member only costs $36/$54 for the year and grants you free entry to all of our regular events which are hosted nearly every weekend of the year around Hobart. For more information about becoming a HoGS member, head to http://www.hogs.org.au/joining-hogs/.

Table allocation: Tables will be allocated on a first in best dressed basis in order of booking. However, you will not be allocated a table until your payment comes through on the HoGS account. Georgie will contact you when we receive your payment and let you know what table numbers remain so you can choose. Your table number will also be your team number. For the table arrangement photo see the event discussion. In general, the smaller numbers are closest to the bar, exit and restaurant and the larger numbers are closest to the screen.

2016 Annual General Meeting

Patricia Mackenzie : October 19, 2016 4:50 pm : HoGS News

Saturday, 22 October 2016, 7 pm
Community Hall, 59 Cambridge Road, Bellerive

HoGS’s Annual General Meeting will be held this Saturday, 22 October, at 7 pm at the Community Hall, 59 Cambridge Road, Bellerive (on the left, just past the pedestrian overpass), for all those who have paid their 2016-17 membership fees.

The meeting is open to the public, but non-members cannot vote. If you have not yet paid your membership for the year, you will have the opportunity to do so on the day.

The AGM is when the committee reports on all that has happened in the previous twelve months and announces plans for the coming year, and when a new HoGS committee is voted in.

This year we again have an unusual situation, in that we have exactly the number of candidates to fill the seats on the committee. Thus, there will be no committee election, and the new committee will be introduced at the meeting.

All members are encouraged to make an effort to attend this once-a-year event. It will occur at the start of our regular HoGS night in Bellerive. The meeting itself should take no more than 30 minutes, after which you will have ample opportunity to play games.

We hope to see you Saturday.

HoGS presents… GEEK QUIZ NIGHT #2

Georgie Woodward : March 6, 2016 8:58 pm : HoGS News

GeekQuiz_update-page-001

The Hobart Games Society (HoGS) Inc. is excited to announce our second annual GEEK QUIZ NIGHT! We will be keeping the structure pretty similar to last year with topics including video games, comics and cartoons, tabletop games, tv, science and more! There will be even more opportunities to win prizes this year and we already have over $500 worth of prizes confirmed from the likes of Area 52Good Games Hobart, Polymorph, Dan Solo Comics & Collectables and Cadbury!

Our first quiz last year sold out very quickly so you’ll need to get in fast to confirm your spot! First in best dressed (the tables at the front have better viewing of the screens). The price is $60 per team of 4-6 people. To book, all you need to do is pay the $60 to the HoGS bank account (details at the end of the description) and email secretary@hogs.org.au with the name of at least one team member (more if you know them) and the contact number of the person booking. We will also need your team name at some point before the night so get brainstorming!

We are holding the quiz in the function room on the top floor of Hotel SOHO with a starting time of 7pm on Saturday April 30th but you’re welcome to come earlier if you want to grab something to eat first. We will be setting up the room earlier in the day so you should be able to come in and sit at your table from 6ish if you want to settle in and eat dinner there before the quiz.

Please note that as Hotel SOHO serves both food and drink, you will not be able to bring either of those things on the night. Rest assured that there is a great menu to keep you going throughout the night though.

There will be 10 rounds, plus two table rounds that you can work on throughout the night. The rounds will be split into three sections with breaks in between. We would be hoping to finish up by around 11pm but no promises!

Keep in mind this is an 18+ event.

Contact secretary@hogs.org.au for more info 🙂

HoGS Halloween 2015

Saturday, 31 October 2015
4 pm – midnight
Lenah Valley Community Hall, Creek Road, Lenah Valley

October is a five-weekend month and we’re taking advantage of that to celebrate HoGS’ eleventh year with a Halloween Spooktacular on the 31st. We’ll have themed tabletop games (City of Horror, Zombie Fluxx, etc) for those who like that sort of thing, and a fund-raising barbecue at dinner time. Costumes are optional but welcomed, and we’ll have a prize for best costume as well as a lucky door prize.

At the birthday bash there will also be a used game sale table to help the games you’re over (or never got into in the first place) find a new home. There’ll be plenty of fun for everyone. We hope you’ll join us!

2015 Annual General Meeting

Patricia Mackenzie : August 19, 2015 4:39 pm : HoGS News

Saturday, 22 August 2015, 7 pm
Lenah Valley Community Hall, Creek Road

HoGS’s Annual General Meeting will be held this Saturday, 22 August, at 7 pm at the Lenah Valley Community Hall in Creek Road, for all those who have paid their 2015-16 membership fees.

This year we have an unusual situation, in that we have exactly the number of candidates to fill the seats on the committee. Thus, there will be no committee election, and the new committee will be introduced at the meeting.

We will consider a resolution that exempts us from lodging an annual financial statement with the Government. As an organisation with an income of less than $40k, we can avoid this requirement and the accompanying audit fees.

All members are encouraged to make an effort to attend this once-a-year event. It will occur in the middle of our 4-10 pm evening in Lenah Valley. If you’re playing a game that hasn’t finished by 7, you can pause the game for the few minutes the meeting will take.

We hope to see you Saturday.

HICC at WGF

This year we are pleased to announce that the Hobart International Chess Club will be joining us at our Winter Gamesfest. It makes sense – Chess is, after all, a strategy board game!

Throughout the event, members of the HICC will be present to introduce people to various forms of chess. We hope that they will also have the opportunity to learn more about the kinds of games HoGS people usually play!

The HICC schedule is:
Saturday

  • 10:30 am – Chess 960 Demo

Chess 960 (or Fischer Random Chess) was invented by former World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer. It employs the same board and pieces as standard chess, but the starting position of the pieces on the players’ home ranks is randomised.

  • 12:30 pm – Horde Chess Demo

Horde Chess is a fun variant where White has 36 pawns and no other pieces, Black has a normal set of chess pieces. White must checkmate the black king before Black captures all the pawns. All normal chess rules apply… well, as much as possible when one side has no King!

  • 2-3 pm – Simultaneous Chess Challenge

One HICC member will face off four challengers at once. Try it and see if your skills are a match to a quarter of an experienced chess player’s attention!

  • 5-8 pm – One-on-One Challenge

This is your opportunity to play one-on-one with an HICC representative and receive some coaching and information. Each session is 15 minutes and will include one or two games, plus comments.

Sunday

  • 10:30 am – Chess 960 Demo
  • 12:30 pm – Horde Chess Demo
  • 2-3 pm – Simultaneous Chess Challenge
